Materials Listening
This independant project was developed for the Human Kinds assignment (02.2025), which explores how design, rather than adapting the environment to human needs, could instead reshape humans (our bodies, behaviors, and systems) to exist in better harmony with the world, considering the impact of emerging technologies on bodily functions and ecological interactions.
Materials are often seen as passive, existing only for human use and transformation. But what if we reversed this perspective? What if materials could “observe” and “listen” to us just as we do to them? This video expands on Listen to the Materials, which captured the human perspective on material interactions through The Clapper, translating textures into sound. By attaching a wide-angle camera directly to the instrument, this project shifts to the material’s point of view, simulating what materials might “see” and “experience” when struck and recorded by human hands. Postproduction combined multiple tools, including Ableton Live, TouchDesigner, Insta360 Studio, and Adobe Premiere Pro, to merge real footage with digital reconstructions.
