Prototype and fabrication



After purchasing a contact microphone kit from the Media Studios at Central Saint Martins, I decided to test my idea. I removed a truck from a cheap skateboard to use as a base for transmitting vibrations from materials to the microphone. I crafted a handle out of cardboard, attached the microphone to the side of the truck, and headed to the park to record sounds from various textures.



The design of the instrument began to take shape through sketching, prototyping, and 3D modeling. It was envisioned as a metal-cast wheel welded to a steel handle, with the microphone integrated into the structure.



The fabrication required frequent collaboration between the metal and jewelry workshops. While I fabricated the handle from 2mm folded sheet steel in the metal workshop, the wheel was 3D-printed in wax and cast in gilding metal by the jewelry technicians. After casting, the wheel was mounted on a lathe to remove imperfections and refine its finish.
